Last week's ballot |
Dropped Out: Oregon (#17), Iowa (#21), Florida State (#23).
A few thoughts:
- No major changes at the top. The teams that were supposed to impress certainly did that. The notable exception here is Oklahoma, who lost their quarterback and their season opener. BYU reaps the benefits with a notable jump in the poll. Expect them to rise more in the overall poll, as this blog had the Cougars pretty high in the preseason ballot (No. 10).
- It was kind of a no-brainer to bring Notre Dame, Cincinnati, and Miami in. The Fighting Irish may not have played a terribly formidable foe, but they also didn't feast on a cupcake. 35-0 over Nevada is damn impressive. The Bearcats thorougly mauled Rutgers in New Jersey, thanks to Tony Pike and a surprisingly athletic defense. Miami's win over Florida State was a classic. Fun game, and a great finish. The Hurricanes clearly made a good call at quarterback, going with Jacory Harris over Robert Marve.
- Oklahoma and Virginia Tech took the biggest falls. Oklahoma still has a shot at the national title, as their Big 12 schedule is rough enough to allow them to overcome this loss. However, if Sam Bradford doesn't come back strong in a reasonable time frame, the Sooners are summarily screwed, despite an improved defense. Virginia Tech just looked flat offensively against Alabama. The rest of the season will tell the tale of this impressive effort by the Crimson Tide, but for now it's hard not to put part of this on the Hokies' inability to develop a passing attack to rival their running game.
i like it. you seem to be one of the few sane people that have tOSU rated correctly. unfortunately, as a big 10 fan, i think the conference is going to take another gigantic kick in the nuts when usc rolls the buckeyes.

..and where, my esteemed former co-host, are the Missouri Tigers on your ballot?!
ReplyDeleteBeat someone better than a middle-of-the-pack Big 11 team, sir.
ReplyDeleteHeh.
If Missouri keeps playing well, they're probably in as soon as someone on my list falters. Picking the last 8-12 teams in my ballot was very tough, with so little evidence to go on.
